Spirits on the Frontier

Join the Meeteetse Museums for a special Zoom presentation by author Sherry Monahan! Like many frontier towns, Meeteetse has been home to several bars throughout its history. But what did people drink in the late 1800s? What were saloons really like? Sherry Monahan, author of “The Golden Elixir of the West: Whiskey and the Shaping of America” joins us to examine these questions on February 19, 2021 at 6:30 pm MDT on Zoom. This program will also be live streamed on the Meeteetse Museums’ Facebook page.

If you’d like to join Sherry with a cocktail to start off the program, try making this popular drink from 1888:

Whiskey Hot

1 to 2 lumps sugar with a little hot water to dissolve the sugar well
2/3 cup hot water
2 ounces whiskey
1 lemon peel strip
Nutmeg
(Use a hot whiskey glass or mug)

Dissolve the sugar in the water and fill the glass and mix well. Squeeze and throw in the lemon peel and grate a little nutmeg on top.
