Join us on July 25th, 2026, to celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy with an excursion to the Double Dee Ranch in the Shoshone National Forest! Explore the historic dude ranch visited by Amelia Earhart in 1934, learn about the ranch’s broader history, and experience the beauty of the Shoshone Forest. We will caravan from the Museums at 9:00 AM to reach the Double Dee around 10 to 10:15 AM; tour participants must drive themselves to the ranch. If you know the way and would prefer to drive to the site independently, feel free to meet Museum staff there instead of traveling with the group! If you have the space in your vehicle and are willing to lend a hand, please meet at the Museum from 8:30 to 9 to coordinate carpooling.
We recommend using a high-clearance vehicle to reach the Double Dee, as the road is rough in places and there is a creek crossing. Plan to pack in water and pack out any trash. The nearest restrooms to the Double Dee are vault toilets at the Wood River Campground and the Brown Mountain Campground.
Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for last-minute weather-related cancellations, or call the Museum at 307-868-2423 to check whether the tour is a go.
